SANTA MONICA, CA.-Arena 1 Gallery presents The Shape of Space
curated by Sherin Guirguis and Heather Harmon and featuring artists: Vinh Bui, Martin Durazo, Sherin Guirguis, Julia Latane, Timothy Nolan, Kim Schoenstadt, Fran Siegel and Almond Zigmund. The Shape of Space - California, in the 1960's experienced one of its most profound investigations. This movement is called "Light and Space" and includes the artists: Larry Bell, Robert Irwin, James Turrell, Douglas Wheeler and Bruce Nauman. Through works of art, these artists were exploring the effects of light and landscape, environment and sensation. This is investigation had a stunning impact on the art world at the time and left questions today’s artists still consider to be relevant.

Arena 1 is very pleased to announce our upcoming show, "The Shape of Space." This show, curated by Sherin Guirguis and Heather Harmon, seeks to illustrate how today's artists are navigating through issues presented by ideas of light and space. Much of the early works in this movement contemplate light and space through large objects and installations. Here in "The Shape of Space" artists deal with these thoughts in a way that is both tactile and elusive. The show both contains objects and their counterparts, fluorescents and shadows, spaces and non-spaces.

Heather Harmon is the director of Patricia Faure gallery. She received her MFA from Art Center and her BA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Sherin Guirguis is an artist living and working in Los Angeles. She received her MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and her BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Most recently her work was exhibited at Patricia Faure Gallery in Santa Monica and is currently in a group show at the Tucson Museum of Contemporary Art. Guirguis has been involved in several curatorial projects including, Supersized at Frumkin Duval Gallery, Girl on Girl at Miller Durazo Artist Projects and Midas at POST, Los Angeles.

ARENA 1 is a non-profit exhibition space founded by Santa Monica Art Studios directors Yossi Govrin and Sherry Frumkin. Based in an historical hangar at the Santa Monica Airport, ARENA 1 invites newly established as well as internationally known curators to develop innovative and compelling exhibitions of emerging artists from their regions.
