6 Innovative Ways to Cultivate Artistic Skills in Children

Art is a significant component in your child’s development. It helps develop their cognitive, social, emotional, and communication skills. As a parent cultivating artistic skills is something, you ought to prioritize. Fortunately, nurturing artistic skills is not rocket science; there are various ways you can inspire your child to develop these essential skills.

1. Appreciate Your Child’s Work

You may not realize it, but children often express themselves through art. In many instances, their art is in the form of scraggly figures that aren’t fully recognizable. However, beyond the quirky figures, there lies some deep creativity and an artist yet to be discovered. The first thing you should do after your child makes a drawing is to enquire more about the picture. Doing so gives them the impression you are interested in their work. Secondly, you can discuss the techniques they used to draw the picture. Avoid criticizing their work as it may kill their morale to indulge in artistic activities. Instead, make positive remarks and encourage them to make more drawings.

2. Right Art for the Right Age

Like other developmental milestones, art is a progressive skill that advances with age. A child begins to experiment by making sketchy drawings and slowly progresses to fine drawings that mostly reflect their surroundings. As a parent, the best way to ensure your child makes significant progress artistically is by providing appropriate resources and platforms to help them express themselves better.

3. Expose Them to Art-Oriented Platforms

Museums and art galleries provide your child with a safe space to be curious and spark their artistic interest. They will ask all sorts of questions to satisfy their innate curiosity. Viewing art pieces in museums helps them subconsciously develop their creativity and broaden their knowledge horizon. On the other hand, children that are more inclined to music may benefit from attending musical theatre productions and concerts.

4. Design Clothes For Dolls

Encouraging your child to participate in designing clothes for their fashion dolls is crucial in cultivating creativity and hands-on skills. Designing clothes is easy and fun; with a little guidance, your child can have hours of ultimate fun. Provide them with resources, such as unused clothes, to make cuttings for their designs.

5. Create a Workspace

Dedicate some space in your home for your child’s art projects. Children delight in having their own space where they can freely explore their imagination without any limits. Stock up their art space with supplies such as canvas, crayons, clay, sponges, brushes, fabric, markers, and child-friendly paint. Allow your child to display their unique pieces in their workspace; it gives them some sense of accomplishment in their projects.

6. Do Art With Your Child

Engaging in artistic activities with your kids brings them closer to loving and appreciating art. By default, kids are inclined to imitate your work because they look at you as their role model. Therefore as much as you may be poor in art, be confident in your work to avoid sending the wrong message.
