LONDON, ENGLAND.-Christie's Wednesday sale of property from the renowned Partridge gallery in London was an overwhelming success - the sale totaled $14.9 million and was 91% sold by lot, 93% sold by value. The top lot of the sale was a pair of paintings from Joseph Vernet, Morning and Evening, which sold for $856,000. Also of note was a Queen Anne silver-gilt ewer and sideboard dish by virtuoso craftsman Lewis Mettayer which realized $822,400. The furniture in the sale also drew some spectacular prices, including the jewel-like Louis XVI marquetry table en chiffonniere which soared over its high estimate.
Wednesday afternoon brought The Collection of Evelyn Annenberg Hall: From 640 Park Avenue, which totaled $2,006,460 and was 97% sold by lot, 99% sold by value. With its irresistible combination of provenance and elegance, this sale soared over its high estimate.
And the success continued yesterday with Christie's sale of Important European Furniture, which totaled $7,766,820 and was 79% sold by lot, 88% sold by value. Leading the sale was the parcel-gilt and silvered bronze figure of Hercules by Antico, circa 1500, known as the Boscawen Hercules, a rare masterpiece which sold for $1,696,000. There were also encouraging signs of renewed interest in the 18th century French furniture and works of art, notably a pair of Louis XVI ormolu and Sevrès porcelain vases by Jean Dulac which realized $688,000 and a Sevrès green ground foliage-moulded ewer and basin which realized $318,400.
Christie's combined total for the spring sales of the European Furniture department in New York is a tremendous $28,807,050.
