WASHINGTON, D.C.- Surrounded by mystery and controversy, Goya’s “Majas” are the stars of an exhibition about the representation of women in Goya’s art that opens on Sunday at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The exhibition “Goya: Images of Women”, which was recently displayed at the Prado Museum in Madrid, is expected to receive thousands of visitors. The show includes more than one hundred of the most famous works by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828). However, the transfer of some of the works (specially the famous “Majas”) has caused heated debates and a great deal of controversy, especially after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
