PORTLAND.-The Portland Museum of Art presents the exhibit Mysterious Spirits, Strange Beasts, Earthly Delights. Early Chinese Art from the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Collection. Harold and Arlene Schnitzer have long been well known as major collectors of, and advocates for, the art of the Pacific Northwest. However, over the last 25 years they have also amassed a significant collection of early Chinese art from the pre-Han Kingdom of Chu and the Han Dynasty. Organized by Emeritus Curator Donald Jenkins, this exhibition presents highlights from their remarkable collection. Nearly every aspect of these periods is well represented, with finely-modeled earthenware entertainers, court attendants and animals, tomb guardian figures and beasts, bronze vessels and mirrors.
This exhibition is organized by the Portland Art Museum and will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue. With entries by Donald Jenkins and an essay by Jay Xu, Pritzker Curator of Asian Art at the Art Institute of Chicago.
