CLEVELAND.- The Museum of Contemporary Art presents the exhibit Sarah Kabot: On the Flip Side. Wendy L. Moore Emerging Artist Series Sarah Kabot employs a variety of materials to explore the ordinary or unnoticed details of common objects, overlooked communities and familiar spaces. First, with acute observation, she looks for distinctions in the mundane elements of a variety of objects and environments. She then accentuates these parts using mirroring, replication, repetition and amplification to illustrate how they influence and inform our perception of reality. For this exhibition, Kabot has meticulously cut out the white space of every piece of notebook paper in a spiral binder, replicated the William D. Ginn Gallery’s architecture using only paper, and taken photographs of every blue sky that she observes in Cleveland, among other works. By identifying meaning in the underlying structures of such objects and spaces, Kabot emphasizes the fundamental relationship between form and content. Her work shifts our perspective on the rudiments of life by focusing our attention on the details of our surroundings.

The eighth artist to be featured in this series, Sarah Kabot received her MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2002 and her BFA from the University of Michigan in 1998. She is an assistant professor at the Cleveland Institute of Art, as well as a summer instructor at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. Her work has been exhibited in galleries such as Vermont Studio Center; the Cultural Center of Polecni, Pieksamaki, Finland; Reinberger Gallery, Cleveland Institute of Art; and SPACES gallery, Cleveland, among others. Her awards have included a CAA Tuition Grant (2000-2002); a Merit Scholarship and Grant to the Vermont Studio Center (1999); and a Merit Scholarship for the University of Michigan (1998).
