DAYTON, OHIO.- The Dayton Art Institute presents the exhibit Aperture at Fifty. In 1952, six photographers including Minor White, Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange and others launched a new publication named Aperture, which was entirely devoted to the fine art of photography and its artists and art lovers. Aperture has grown from a small periodical to an organization that reaches the largest and most diverse audience for significant photography worldwide. The printed issues of the publication trace this modern art form from its French and English birth in the 1830s through the different movements of Pictorialism, Photo-Secession, "Group 64," Modernism and Postmodernism as well as several others up through the 21st century.
Photography Past/Forward: Aperture at Fifty explores these currents and trends in photography that have brought the medium to its present status as one of the most important art forms, and arguably, the most powerful medium of communication. It demonstrates how Aperture shaped and furthered this evolution, expanding the audience for photography.
Aperture at Fifty celebrates the use of photography today in everything from design and advertising to journalism, video, film, performance, and art installation. Photographers represented will include Dorothea Lange, Minor White, Ansel Adams, Paul Strand, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Sally Mann, Nan Goldin, Chuck Close, Robert Rauschenberg, Bill Viols, and Barbara Kruger.
