NEW YORK, NY.- The Thursday, February 29 auction of Vintage Posters & Graphic Design will be a combination of many of Swann’s most desirable poster-collecting categories, presenting an exceptional, curated selection of images relating to skiing, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, travel and advertising. New to the February lineup is a robust section of Graphic Design—posters and ephemera—covering movements such as the Vienna Secession, Constructivism, Bauhaus, Mid-Century Modernism, Futurism, Dada and other scintillating styles.

Headlining Art Nouveau is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, with one of 100 signed copies of L’Estampe Originale, 1895 ($40,000-60,000), as well as Alphonse Mucha, with a complete portfolio of his Documents Decoratifs, 1902 ($15,000-20,000); and posters by Pierre Bonnard, Ludwig Hohlwein, Maxfield Parrish, and Leonetto Cappiello.
Pinnacles of the house’s annual ski poster selection are the delightful and rare St. Anton / Arlberg, 1934, by Berta Czegka ($2,000-3,000), and several examples by Martin Peikert with Pontresina / Diavolezza, 1955 ($2,000-3,000), Herbert Bayer with Ski in Aspen Colorado ($4,000-6,000), and Sascha Maurer with Flexible Flyer / Splitkein, 1936 ($2,000-3,000), and Ski Stowe Vermont / Ski Capital of the East, 1950s ($1,000-1,500).

Among some of the other featured sections will be circus and magic, with a group of five circa 1926 small format posters ($1,200); ocean liners with R.S. Pike’s United States Lines / Leviathan, circa 1925 ($3,000-4,000), and Roger Broaders’s Marseille / Porte de L’Afrique du Nord, 1929 ($5,000-7,500); and works putting the spotlight on travel by rail include U.S. destinations such as, New Orleans, Chicago, National Parks and more.

Rounding out the sale with Graphic Design masterpieces, the rare and exquisite Bil - Bol, 1907, by Akseli Gallen-Kallela ($40,000-60,000), Kleine Dada Soiree, 1922, by Kurt Schwitters & Theo van Doesburg ($12,000-18,000), and Emperor Francis Joseph / 60 Years Jubilee, 1908, by Berthold Loffler ($10,000-15,000). Alluring works by László Moholy-Nagy include compositions for Het Overzicht from 1922 and circa 1925 ($8,000-12,000 apiece), and a group of four postcards for various exhibitions from 1924 to 1925 ($1,200-1,800). A run of posters by Edward McKnight Kauffer includes Soaring to Success! Daily Herald – the Early Bird, circa 1973 ($2,000-3,000); a goup of four images advertising American Airlines ($800-1,200); and Summer Sale at Derry & Toms, 1919 ($4,000-6,000). A.M. Cassandre’s Cycles Brilliant, 1925 ($15,000-20,000), Mather Work Incentive, and psychedelic rock posters round out the selection.
