NORTH ADAMS, MA.- Mass Moca presents Gunnar A. Kaldewey: Artist Books for a Global World - Four Collaborations in Depth. This retrospective exhibition features four works by master printer and artist book publisher, Gunnar A. Kaldewey, all created in collaboration at his press in Poestenkill, New York. Working out the tradition of the early 20th century avant-garde -- with a focus on the globalization of printmaking aesthetics -- Kaldewey enlists the creative vision of artists internationally to reinvigorate the encounter between word and image. Working with master binders and alternating between handmade paper made at the Kaldewey Press and fine papers from around the world, Kaldewey creates books that can be appreciated not only for the poetry inside but for their physical, sculptural presence. Together, the books will address issues of language, translation (literal and visual), and temporality. Accompanied by printers' proofs, preparatory sketches, production photographs, and the artists' original drawings, the exhibition at MASS MoCA focuses on the collaborative nature and the creative process in realizing these projects. The four collaborations include: John Ashbery, Not a First (Jonathan Lasker); Walter Benjamin, Angelus Novelus: Über den Begriff der Geschichte (Heribert Ottersbach); Williams Butler Yeats, The Gyres (Source of Imagery) (Richard Tuttle); and Pier Paolo Pasolini, Ciant da li Ciampanis, Luis Famos, Di D’Invern, Andri Peer, Stradun, Poesias Rumantschas cen Disigns da Not Vital (Not Vital).

This exhibition is held in conjunction with the Chapin Library of Rare Books, Williams College, as well as concurrent exhibitions at the Williams College Museum of Art and the Sterling & Francine Clark Art Institute.
