Freeman’s | Hindman will be a month to remember for fine art lovers. The auction house will have its diversity of expertise and national reach on full display as it offers seven fine art auctions in four collecting categories in three different salerooms. Across all seven sales, Freeman’s | Hindman will offer more than 750 lots.
The series of fine art sales will kick off in Denver on May 9 with Western and Contemporary Native American Art followed by an accompanying online sale which will end the following day. That weekend, Modern and Contemporary Art will be held in Freeman’s | Hindman’s Philadelphia saleroom on May 11. The following week in Chicago, European Art and American Art will be offered in back-to-back auctions on May 16 with an accompanying online sale ending the following day. Rounding out the month will be the single owner sale of Post-War and Contemporary Art from the Estate of Jordan & Cynthia Katz on May 21 in Philadelphia.
Western and Contemporary Native American Art – May 9
The Western and Contemporary Native American Art auction is brimming with an array of artworks by historic masters, such as Eanger Irving Couse and Hermon Atkins MacNeil, and beloved contemporary artists, such as Billy Schenck, Tom Uttech, and Jerry Jordan. Impassioned collectors of western, wildlife, sporting, and contemporary Native American art will enjoy an impressive selection of works spanning the category.

Modern and Contemporary Art – May 11
Held two days later on May 11 in Philadelphia, Modern and Contemporary Art features paintings, sculpture, drawings, and prints by Andy Warhol, Eva Hesse, Claes Oldenburg, Alex Katz, Hans Hofmann, Elizabeth Murray, and Sam Gilliam, among others. The auction highlights works from several prominent private collections and estates strongly committed to collecting renowned artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, including the Richard E. Oldenburg Estate, the Dr. Julian Katz and Dr. Sheila Moriber Katz Estate, and the Philip Pearlstein Estate.
If there is a recurrent theme to our May 11 Modern & Contemporary Art auction, it might be "the generosity of artists." The wonderful group of works by Claes Oldenburg were gifted to his brother Richard, the noted director of the Museum of Modern Art, New York in the 1990s; the two early works by Warhol were given to fellow artist and friend, Philip Pearlstein, early in their careers when they exhibited together. And the rare Eva Hesse drawing, which featured on Antiques Roadshow, was a wedding gift to her friend from Yale.

European Art – May 16
The first of two auctions held on May 16 in Freeman’s | Hindman’s Chicago saleroom, the European Art auction offers a broad selection of European paintings, drawings, and sculpture. Works by pre-Raphaelite artists Daniel Maclise and Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale, two important oils from the racing world by John Frederick Herring the Elder, as well as works by notable German, French, and British artists, such as Ernst Barlach, Duncan Grant, Sonia Delaunay, and Armand Guillaumin will be on offer. The sale is completed by a group of works by Vũ Cao Đàm, Lê Phổ, and Henri Henri Mecht Maïk.

In the afternoon session of May 16, Freeman's | Hindman is delighted to present American Art, featuring a fine selection of paintings, works on paper, and sculptures by some of the most significant American artists. While a sublime and tumultuous seascape by Thomas Moran and a nostalgia-suffused interior scene by Andrew Newell Wyeth lead the way, other important highlights include works by Albert Bierstadt, Alfred Thompson Bricher, Mary Cassatt, Grandma Moses, Francis Speight, and Donald De Lue, to name a few. On May 21, Freeman’s | Hindman is proud to close out the month with the single-owner sale of Post-War and Contemporary Art from the Estate of Jordan & Cynthia Katz. The collection represents over 30 years of passionate collecting. Featuring a curated selection of fresh-to-market paintings, prints, and sculptures, the auction is a testament to the couple’s discerning taste and dedication to art of the 20th Century.
Beginning as a modest art collection in the early 1980s, the Collection of Jordan & Cynthia Katz blossomed over the following decades to reflect their profound admiration for aesthetically beautiful objects, all while under the guidance of gallerist Margaret Lipworth. Together they traveled to New York, London, and Palm Beach, visiting galleries and studios of the artists represented in this sale. Jordan was an amateur artist himself, creating paintings and sculptures that were inspired by the art in their collection. According to their daughter, the experience of collecting was an activity that gave them both great pleasure, and their art was proudly displayed on the walls of their three homes.
