MEXICO CITY.- The Museo Rufino Tamayo presents Lisa Yuskavage, on view through September 17, 2006. The exhibition includes 18 works (watercolors and oils on canvas) dating from 1992 to 2005. According to Tobias Ostrander, curator of the exhibition, stated that the works by Yuskavage are based on historic and contemporary images. He added that the nude poses frequently come from popular culture, specially from fashion magazines and erotic photography. The artist combines these with pictoric techniques inspired on the Baroque and modern European painting.
This is the first time the artist has an exhibition in Mexico City with a solo exhibition. The works selected try to emphasize the self-reflection line present in the professional development of Yuskavage, a line that goes from timid figures to more real figures.
During the 1990s the artist was identified as a post-feminist or bad art girl because her works confronted the viewer with strange elements and exaggerated physical features.
