NEW YORK.- The American Association of Museums through its Society of Illustrators invites artists to submit entries for its 49th Annual Exhibition. Works selected by the juries will be shown at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators, 128 East 63rd Street, from January 31 to April 28, 2007. The entire show will be presented in full color in ILLUSTRATORS 49, "America s Original Annual of Illustration." The 26th educational traveling exhibition, with a selection of 40 works, will tour U.S. colleges through June, 2008.
ELIGIBILITY
Any illustration created or initially published between October 1, 2005 and October 1, 2006 that has not been accepted in the Annual previously, is eligible. International entries are welcome. Each submission will receive consideration by every member of the jury for its category. Please be certain that the original art will be available for exhibition and can remain at the Society from January through May 2007. High-quality prints will be hung in the case of digitally created or pre-separated art only.
CATEGORIES
All commissioned work whether published or not, should be entered in one of the first five categories: Sequential/Series, Editorial, Book, Advertising and Institutional.
SEQUENTIAL/SERIES
Any multi-image project for which a sequence of images is necessary to fully convey an idea or story. Examples: work that has been produced or published as comic books, art journalism, graphic novels, pre-production art and animation (including television, film, web or video games). Individual images from sequential or series may also be submitted in their respective categories. Self-published projects must be published in a run of at least 500 copies. Childrens book entries should be entered in the Book category only, not Sequential.
SERIES
3-10 Illustrations published together and related by theme or subject by the same artist.
EDITORIAL
Examples: work commissioned by newspapers or magazines, medical and scientific journals or online magazines.
BOOK
Examples: all illustrations originally commissioned for use inside or on the covers of hardbound and paperback books, including fiction and non-fiction; childrens and young adult literature and comic books. Promotional posters or advertisements depicting book art must be submitted in the book category.
ADVERTISING
Examples: illustrations for advertisements appearing in newspapers, magazines or on television; video and CD covers; brochures, fashion, point-ofpurchase and packaging illustration; movie and theater posters.
INSTITUTIONAL
Examples: work appearing on merchandise, announcements, annual reports, calendars, corporate projects, government service projects, greeting cards, newsletters, in-house publications, philatelic work and collectibles.
UNCOMMISSIONED
This includes all self-generated work such as portfolio samples, sourcebook ads and uncommissioned stock that are currently unpublished except as promotion for the artist or artists representative. Commissioned work appearing as self-promotion should be entered in the category for which the work was originally done. Note: there will be no art directors or clients credited for Uncommissioned works.
DAVID P. USHER GREENWICH WORKSHOP MEMORIAL AWARD
DAVID USHER founded The Greenwich Workshop in 1972 and long regarded illustrators to be underappreciated artists. As a publishing entrepreneur, David was an artist in his own right, as well as an adventurer, philanthropist and an enormously charismatic industry leader. This will be the fifth selection of this annual award.
THE AWARD:
An artist will be selected from work exhibited in the 49th Annual Exhibition who best exemplifies David Ushers respect for craft, vision and personal style.
CASH PRIZE:
$1,000 will be awarded to the artist and consideration given to the creation of a print of the work with full royalties to the artist.
HOW TO ENTER:
SUBMIT PROOFS OR TEARSHEETS
of published work. If a tearsheet is unavailable or if no hard copy format was ever created or if over-sized or three-dimensional, enter a high-quality print no larger than 8 1/2x11. Do not submit slides or digital files.
Do not mat or mount prints, proofs or tearsheets. If there is more than one illustration on a page, clearly identify which illustration is to be judged.
Do not submit electronic files or original art. Entry material will not be returned. Complete one entry form for each piece of art. If your art is chosen to be in the show, a copy of your entry form will be returned to you. You must be able to determine which entry was accepted from the information you supply. Title all work and enter page numbers if applicable. When entering a piece that includes multiple images, indicate on the form which one illustration is to be considered for judging (except for entries to the Sequential/Series category). credits and address must be complete, accurate and legible. Credit information for the annual book, award medals and certificates will be taken from the entry form.
FOR PRINTED ENTRIES,
the entry form must be taped securely to the back of the tearsheet or print.
FOR SEQUENTIAL ENTRIES,
for print entries, submit the entire project as one entry, with one entry form taped securely to the back. The preferred formats for anima tion entries are VHS, DVD and CD and should not exceed two minutes in length (edit as needed). Attach the entry form to cassette box or jewel case.
49th ANNUAL ENTRY FEES
$30 per entry for non-members of the New York Society of Illustrators.
$20 for members of the New York Society of Illustrators entering their own illustrations.
$35 per entry for non-members of the New York Society of Illustrators entering Sequential / Series.
$30 for members of the New York Society of Illustrators entering their own Sequential/ Series work.
Art directors and designers pay the non-member fee.
Please enclose one check or money order payable to the Society of Illustrators.

ILLUSTRATORS 49 ANNUAL BOOK
All accepted entries will be reproduced in full color in the ILLUSTRATORS 49 annual. Complete credit will accompany the image, including size, media and artists and/or reps phone number(s). The Hanging/ Publication fee is required for reproduction in the book, whether or not the work was displayed in the exhibition. AWA R D S Gold and Silver Medals will be presented to the illustrators, art directors and clients of those works judged the best in each category of commissioned work. Gold and Silver Award Certificates will be presented for the best Uncommissioned work. Medals and award cetificates will be presented only if original art is available to hang in the exhibition. A high quality print will qualify in case of digitally created work. All other accepted entries will receive Certificates of Merit.
GALAS
The Sequential Awards Gala will take place on Tuesday, January 30, 2007.
The Editorial and Book Awards Gala will take place on Friday, February 23, 2007.
The Advertising, Institutional and Uncommisioned Awards Gala will take place on Friday, March 30, 2007.
