Trends and Philosophies of Contemporary Painters
Work of art from the exhibit.

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.- The Butler Institute of American Art Elements of Abstraction: In Stillness through November 5 This group exhibition, curated by New York artist Troy Tecau, reflects the trends and philosophies of contemporary painters who have chosen to work in the tradition of American abstraction. Artists whose works are included in this show are: Geoff Davis, Todd DeLuca, Michael Goldberg, Bill Jensen, Margrit Lewczuk, Troy Tecau and Lynn Umlauf.

Michael Goldberg, a second generation Abstract Expressionist painter known for his action-packed canvases, went through several phases that included monochromatic works of red and then black, bands of white on black, caligraphic images and bright bands of color hinting of architectural forms. He was also an art educator who taught at the University of California, Berkeley from 1961 to 1962; Yale University in 1967 and the University of Minnesota in 1968.

Bill Jensen is an artist best known for his captivating paintings of spirals and undulating shapes in deep, bold colors. The shapes on his canvases are vaguely organic. The pod-shaped forms, twists and ellipses are pushed together to create a tension filled field of color and life. The natural forms and swirling brushstrokes create a magical landscape. His work also explores paint as a textural element, visible in layers scraped and piled on the surface of the canvas.
