HANOVER, NH.- The Hood Museum of Art presents the exhibit Paris 1968: Photographs by Serge Hambourg through November 18. French photographer Serge Hambourg's photographs provide an eyewitness account of the events of May and June 1968 in Paris when students and worker strikes against the political and social establishment brought the country to a standstill. Barricades went up, arrests were made, street fighting and other violence made history in France during a time of similar protests around the world. The thirty-six photographs in this exhibition depict students and workers marching in the streets of Paris as well as the reaction of bystanders and the opposition, who were loyal to the government of President Charles de Gaulle.
Recognized by the American Association of Museums as "a national model," the Hood Museum of Art is one of the oldest and largest college museums in the country, housing an outstanding collection of works of art and artifacts and presenting a lively and diverse schedule of exhibitions and educational programs. As the only institution of its kind in the region, the museum serves as a vital cultural resource for the students, faculty, and staff of Dartmouth College as well as the many rural communities of the Upper Connecticut River Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont.
