Rovyka's to Auction Collection of Jack Naylor
Important Mammoth Daguerreotype by Whipple.



BOSTON, MA.- The Jack Naylor Collection includes works by American master daguerreotype artists from the mid 19th century. Featured in the auction are original letters from the master daguerreotypists of Boston, Southworth & Hawes. The auction will be held on September 30, 10am Eastern, at the Copley Fairmont Hotel in Boston, MA.

Thurman F. (Jack) Naylor is the former Chief Executive Officer of Thompson International Corporation. For nineteen years he has served as a trustee and chair of the Acquisitions Committee for the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, NY. He is a consultant to Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of Science, founder & director of the Museum of Imaging Technology at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, creator of The Naylor Museum of Photographic History in Yokohama, Japan and past president of the Photographic Resource Center at Boston. The early photography consists of over 300 daguerreotypes made in the mid 19th century.

The picture below is a John Adams Whipple Mammoth Daguerreotype, mammoth 12 3/4 x 10 3/4 inch daguerreotype by John Adams Whipple of Boston, according to the Naylor Collection notes "is one of the few oversize plates and one of the largest commercial daguerreotype in existence. It is two and one-half times larger than the rare whole plate. The frame is made of bass wood (linden tree) and the raised bezel is covered in 22-carat gold. (new mat). The image is by John Adams Whipple of Boston, Massachusetts. The well-posed and attractive family group is from Maine.” Provenance: The Jack Naylor Collection Note: According to the Naylor Collection, they are aware of only two Whipple daguerreotypes of this size in existence. The other is a mammoth plate by John Adams Whipple of the Tilton Family in the Jack Naylor’s main collection.
