MALAGA.- The Centre Pompidou Málaga has launched the eighth edition of its annual exhibition series Hors Pistes, a platform for contemporary artists to explore current themes through photography and video. Titled New Ruralities, this year's exhibition examines the evolving identity and role of rural areas in today’s society, featuring the work of nine Spanish and French artists. The exhibition runs until January 13, 2025, providing an immersive look at rural transformation through a collection of compelling visuals.

A Contemporary Take on Rural Life

Curated by Géraldine Gomez, José María Luna, and Elena Robles, New Ruralities presents nine distinct pieces that challenge traditional views of the countryside. The exhibition delves into the evolving landscapes, traditions, and people that make up these regions, proposing a fresh perspective on rural existence. By bringing rural areas into focus, Hors Pistes seeks to redefine them not as spaces in decline, but as hubs of sustainable living and cultural vibrancy.

The concept of "new ruralities" highlights the ongoing reinvention of rural spaces, where innovation coexists with tradition. Once perceived as stagnant or declining, these areas are now undergoing revitalization, spurred by eco-friendly initiatives, the rise of organic agriculture, remote work, and cultural activities. This exhibition underscores how rural regions are reshaping themselves to adapt to modern needs while preserving their unique heritage.

Art Inspired by the Land and its People

The artists participating in Hors Pistes 2024 include Jean-Marc Chapoulie, Simon Geneste, Andrea Gaidano, Laurent Roth, Juan del Junco, Nilo Gallego, Sara Boldú Botam, Karina Aguilera Skvirsky, and Asunción Molinos Gordo. Their works explore the complexity of rural life, whether through long-standing connections to these regions or recent discoveries. They focus on the beauty of landscapes, the depth of traditions, and the unique stories of local communities.

Through their pieces, the artists capture the rhythms of rural life, depicting a profound connection to the land, the seasons, natural cycles, and the people who inhabit these spaces. Visitors are encouraged to reflect on sustainable ways of life, environmental preservation, and the importance of valuing rural heritage.

Promoting Rural Resilience and Awareness

New Ruralities resonates with the Centre Pompidou Málaga’s semi-permanent exhibition, Place-ness. Habitar un lugar, which also explores the connection between humans and their environments. Together, these exhibitions contribute to a broader conversation about the vitality of rural areas and the need to maintain these often overlooked spaces.

By bridging art and rural identity, Hors Pistes aims not only to foster awareness of the unique characteristics of rural life but also to promote its resilience. This exhibition serves as a reminder of the importance of these spaces, encouraging a wider audience to appreciate and support rural diversity and sustainable practices.
