MIAMI BEACH, FLA.- Galeria Subtítulo announces the landmark 10th-anniversary retrospective of Colombian artist Juan Sebastian’s work, Veils, Shadows, and Spaces of the Self, presented as a solo exhibition at SCOPE Miami Beach during this December's Miami Art Week. This exhibition commemorates a decade of Sebastian’s exploration into identity, ritual, and transformation through the veiled figure, showcasing the evolution of his artistic vision and thematic depth.

Juan Sebastian, Hombre Armado, 2018, 36 x 24 in.

In Veils, Shadows, and Spaces of the Self, Juan Sebastian invites viewers into a world where identity and reality are fluid, echoing themes from his Colombian heritage and the symbolic resonance of fabric. Each work in this collection balances the visible and the hidden, using veils as a transformative tool that both conceals and reveals deeper truths. With a profound sense of storytelling, Sebastian’s veiled figures move beyond traditional portraiture, portraying bodies freed from fixed identity markers and immersed in the tension between the domestic and the fantastical.

Juan Sebastian, La Caricia, 2020, 60 x 6o in.

Through the interplay of light, fabric, and gesture, Sebastian creates scenes where the everyday morphs into surreal encounters, challenging viewers to question the boundaries of self and reality. Drawing on ritualistic and cultural symbols—from religious iconography to performative gestures—his work evokes a sense of timelessness that blends personal narratives with collective mythologies, reflecting his ongoing dialogue with identity as an evolving construct.

Juan Sebastian, Tiempos Fugaces , 2018, 40 x 60 in.

This solo presentation also marks a milestone in Juan Sebastian’s career, providing an intimate look at how he has transformed the act of concealment into a vehicle for self-exploration.

Juan Sebastian, Cuando Fui Cisne, 2021, 40 x 60 in.

Juan Sebastian is a Colombian-born fine art photographer based in Miami. Inspired by his roots and influenced by magical realism, his work spans themes of identity, heritage, and the subconscious. Over the past ten years, Sebastian has gained recognition for his unique approach to portraiture, blurring the lines between fantasy and reality and challenging traditional notions of selfhood. His work has been exhibited internationally, including the SELF MEMORIES exhibition alongside the Venice Art Biennale.

Juan Sebastian, Entre nosotros, 2021, 48 x 42 in.

Galería Subtítulo is dedicated to showcasing innovative, cross-cultural contemporary art that pushes the boundaries of identity, tradition, and transformation.
