BONDI, AUSTRALIA.- Sculpture by the Sea is celebrating its 10th birthday exhibition and everyone is invited! The Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk will again be transformed into a magnificent outdoor art gallery with 110 sculptures from across the world from 2 - 19 November this year.

The celebrations begin a week before the Bondi exhibition with one of the most popular sculptures ever exhibited, the 10 little friends by Richie Kuhaupt, making a return visit, popping up right across Sydney in unusual and unlikely places from the Blue Mountains to Bondi Beach.

During the exhibition Sculpture by the Sea will be taking to the sky with Guy Warren’s “Icarus” to be created several times by a sky writer for the whole of Sydney to see. Other highlights include the weird and the wonderful, right through to the monumental Phillip King from England, one of the most highly regarded Sculptors in the world; Jean-Pierre Rives, one of the greats of world rugby, former French rugby captain turned sculptor, 8 exquisite works by Japanese artists; 10 specially-invited Birthday artists; and Monumental is not the word to describe the sculptures by young Australian sculptors Jarrod Taylor; who created the 9m high scaffolding wave last year, and Angus Adameitis.

In 1997, the one-day exhibition began with a team of volunteers working out of Handley’s lounge room and the enthusiasm of local sculptors. The budget for the exhibition was just $11,500 with the whole show put together in just 10 weeks.

The extraordinary response from the Sydney public quickly saw the exhibition grow into one of Sydney’s biggest and most popular cultural events, attracting an estimated 450,000 visitors and sculptors from across the world.

Now a full-time staff of eight work all year round coordinating the artists and fundraising to make the free to public exhibition possible.

While the exhibition has grown from its humble beginnings, some things have not changed and certain people have been around since day one including the founder David Handley and Ron Robertson-Swann OAM, one of Australia’s most noted sculptors who acts as advisor; private donors including Bryce & Benita Courtenay and Gene & Brian Sherman who have given generously every year; Sydney Water who has sponsored every exhibition; and of course Waverley Council which looks after the coastal walk.
