PIASA reports record-breaking 2024 results, approaching € 65 million in annual auctions

PARIS.- International auction house PIASA has announced robust results for 2024, with total auction sales nearing €65 million (including buyer’s premiums). This figure represents an 8% increase compared to 2023, continuing the company’s steady growth trajectory since 2019.

Executive Management team members Marie Filippi and Frédéric Chambre highlighted several standout collections and strategic initiatives that contributed to these strong results. Notably, PIASA managed prominent estates such as the Geneviève and Jean-Paul Kahn collection in the Modern and Contemporary Art Department, and curated sales from the celebrated designer Raf Simons’ personal collection within the Design Department.

Departmental Highlights

• Design Department: Leading the firm’s success, the Design Department achieved €39 million in sales, an 11% increase year-on-year. Key auctions included:

• Finnish Design with Annmaris (Nov. 6, 2024): A rare “Snowflake” suspension by Paavo Tynell realized €598,000 (est. €180,000–€250,000).

• Design + Picasso Ceramics From the Collection of Raf Simons (Sept. 18, 2024): A tapestry by Le Corbusier sold for €416,000 (est. €50,000–€70,000).

• American Design (Nov. 20, 2024): A unique Harry Bertoia “Bush” series sculpture fetched €234,000 (est. €70,000–€80,000).

Other notable sales included works by Jean-Michel Frank, Gio Ponti, George Nakashima, Joaquim Tenreiro, Ettore Sottsass, and Gabriella Crespi.

Modern and Contemporary Art Department: Sales totaled €18 million, a 7% increase over 2023. Highlights included:

• Paul Sérusier’s Les Batteurs de blé (Feb. 15, 2024): Achieved €806,000 (est. €600,000–€900,000).

• The Geneviève and Jean-Paul Kahn Collection (June 5, 2024): Works by Dorothea Tanning (€650,000), Kay Sage (€585,000), and Andy Warhol (€572,000) exceeded expectations.

Additional successes included Victor Brauner’s Robe de bal, VIII and Léonor Fini’s Pour Sheridan le Fanu.

Other Departments, Online Auctions, Jewelry & Watches: These segments collectively realized nearly €8 million in sales. Within this category, the Jewelry and Watches Department brought in €3 million, highlighted by:

• A platinum ring with a 7.91-carat marquise-cut diamond selling for €158,600 (est. €80,000–€120,000).

• A Van Cleef & Arpels “Panthère” clip from the 1960s that reached €50,700 (est. €18,000–€30,000).

Prestigious pieces by René Boivin, Buccellati, and Theo Fennell also performed strongly.

International Reach and Visibility

In addition to strong sales, PIASA noted a significant international presence, with more than 65% of its auction value in 2024 attributed to overseas clients. This growing global interest underscores PIASA’s reputation and appeal among collectors worldwide.
