COPENHAGEN.- A groundbreaking publication from the Nivaagaards Malerisamling offers fresh insights into its celebrated collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings. Dutch and Flemish Painting at The Nivaagaard Collection marks the first thorough examination of these 57 masterpieces in over a century, revealing new attributions, revised datings, and deeper context about their creation and conservation.

The collection includes works by legendary artists such as Pieter Brueghel II, Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Meindert Hobbema, and Cornelis de Vos. This richly illustrated catalogue brings renewed attention to their significance and provides an in-depth look at their place in the broader history of Dutch and Flemish art.

New Discoveries and Reunited Masterpieces

Extensive research for the catalogue uncovered several remarkable findings. Among them was the reunion of a family portrait by Cornelis de Vos, with the discovery of a missing mother’s depiction. This piece was reunited with Double Portrait of a Father with His Son, forming a complete family grouping now on display.

The catalogue also presents a reassessment of Rembrandt’s Portrait of a 39-Year-Old Woman, connecting it with a presumed counterpart from The Metropolitan Museum of Art. These findings, along with others, showcase the research's ability to unlock new perspectives on well-known works.

Insights into Art and Conservation

Two essays provide a window into the collection’s fascinating history. One explores the acquisitions of Johannes Hage, who assembled the collection with guidance from experts such as Cornelis Hofstede de Groot. Another examines the restoration of these works, including Hage’s collaboration with Alois Hauser, a renowned conservator who helped preserve the collection for future generations.

The research also includes detailed technical studies, such as updated ownership histories, newly identified motifs, and critical analysis of works like David Teniers’ The Empty Mug, Pieter Claesz’s Arrangement with Ham, and Portrait of a Man, previously attributed to Rubens and Van Dyck.

A Richly Illustrated Catalogue

The 384-page publication offers detailed entries for all 57 paintings, complemented by high-resolution images and essays from leading experts. The contributions, primarily written by art historian Angela Jager and supplemented by technical analyses from Professor Jørgen Wadum, highlight the importance of these works in art history and their enduring influence.

An Essential Resource

This publication is a major achievement for the Nivaagaards Malerisamling. By blending historical research with the latest technical expertise, it enriches the understanding of these masterpieces and their place in cultural history. This catalogue will serve as a vital resource for art scholars and enthusiasts, ensuring that the legacy of Dutch and Flemish art continues to inspire future generations.
