HONG KONG .- Para Site announces the appointment of Alan Lo as Board Chair, following the retirement of Alan Lau as Board Chair and Mimi Chun as Board Vice Chair. Lau will stay on as Board Member, whilst Chun will be retiring from the Board to focus on professional and personal pursuits. These changes will come into full effect in February 2025, and bring the total number of active Board Members for Para Site to twelve.

Both Lau and Chun are long-standing members of Para Site’s Board of Directors. Lau joined the Board in 2009. In 2014, Lau took up the mantle of Board Co-Chair, remaining in the post for over a decade. His term overlapped with significant milestones in the organisation’s history, including the relocation from Sheung Wan to its current location in Quarry Bay. During his term, Para Site has staged 89 exhibitions in Hong Kong and abroad. The organisation partnered with leading institutions—including MoMA PS1, Kadist, Rockbund Art Museum, UCCA Dune, Kathmandu Triennale—to create joint exhibitions. Chun’s appointment, first as a Board Co-Vice Chair, and then Vice Chair, also came soon after the first major relocation effort that saw a large expansion in available exhibition space. She first joined the Board in 2014. In a brief statement, Executive Director and Curator Billy Tang notes, ‘I would like to thank Alan Lau and Mimi Chun for their enduring commitment to the success of Para Site. The length of service and stewardship demonstrated towards our organisation cannot be emphasised enough. In ten years, Alan and Mimi have made outsized contributions in establishing the organisation as an international presence on the forefront of developments in contemporary art. Both have worked tirelessly to help Para Site forge new relationships around the globe, and wholeheartedly supported our ambitious programmes.’

Speaking about the transition, Lau states, ‘It has been a pleasure to contribute to the growth of the longest-standing non-profit art space in Hong Kong. As an organisation established by seven Hong Kong artists dedicated to exhibition-making and commissioning, Para Site occupies a special place in the arts ecosystem of Asia-Pacific and beyond. Each of the previous Chairs, from Tsang Tak Ping, Tim Li, William Lim to Yana Peel, helped Para Site expand its mandate, network, and resources to support artists and curators. I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to be a part of this journey, and look forward to continuing to support Para Site. I believe each Board rotation brings new ideas and energy, and we are incredibly lucky to have a Board full of talented and committed members. I am excited to welcome Alan Lo—an accomplished entrepreneur, art patron and an old hand in non-profits—in his new role to guide the next stage of Para Site’s development.’ Chun also states, ‘I am deeply grateful for my journey with Para Site over the last ten years, sharing memorable experiences with my fellow board members, especially Alan Lau and our dedicated team, through challenging times and celebratory moments. I hope Para Site will continue to do great work inspiring audiences in our home city and beyond. Lastly, I would like to give sincere blessings to our newly appointed Board Chair Alan Lo.’

Alan Lo has served as a Board Member of Para Site since 2015. An entrepreneur and investor, Lo is highly active in the arts community in Hong Kong and internationally. Aside from Para Site, Lo has served on the Tate Asia Pacific Acquisition Committee, the Board of Design Trust as former chair, the Advisory Council of Princeton University Art Museum and the Global Council of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MoCA LA). In a statement about his appointment, Lo says, ‘Para Site remains a critical laboratory for new innovations in contemporary art, and many “firsts” are achieved here. Often, it is where new talents are given their first institutional exhibitions in Asia-Pacific, and where new curatorial or artistic practices are debuted. To be able to take on this position is an honour, and I look forward to working closely with everyone to achieve the collective mission of the organisation.’

As of February 2025, the Board Members of Para Site will include: Alan Lo, Antony Dapiran, Sara Wong Chi Hang, Nick Adamus, Shane Akeroyd, Bonnie Chan Woo Tak Chi, Dr. Yeewan Koon, Alan Lau, Adeline Ooi, Federico Tan, Honus Tandijono and Yuki Terase.
