ROSEMONT, PA.- Rosemont College’s Lawrence Gallery continues its fall season with an exciting exhibition of holographs and photographs by local artist Karen Brown. The show opens November 5 and runs through December 1, 2006. An afternoon reception and gallery talk with the artist will be held on campus on Sunday, November 5, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Entitled “Examined Life Series,” the exhibition features pinhole photos taken by Brown from within a few blocks of where she lives in Philadelphia.

“Television and the Internet, from which we receive much of the information about the world around us, has made us more self-sufficient and has contributed to our isolation,” said Brown. “This series is a reflection of the progression of isolation. Everything, even the most current technological advancement, deteriorates and becomes obsolete over time. ”

Karen Brown consistently and imaginatively experiments with new techniques combining them with a fine art component. This body of her work consists of cast plaster, holography, and pinhole photo transparencies encased in clear panels of acrylic with fluorescent lighting. Pinhole photography and holography are both forms of lensless photography. The softer effect of this method is close to how things are viewed through the human eye. The images are produced from the high and low ends of the technological spectrum.

Karen Brown lives in Philadelphia and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She has had six solo and two person shows and has been in ten group exhibitions along the United States and Germany. This is Brown’s third show at Lawrence Gallery, but it is her first solo show.

In 2004 Brown participated in “A-Lumina: Metal Works by Louise Rauh and Karen Brown” at UNI Gallery of Art, University of Northern Iowa. In 1998, Brown’s “Twenty Years of Art, Science and Technology” was on exhibit in Braunschweig, Germany. Lawrence Gallery is located in Lawrence Hall on the Rosemont College’s campus at 1400 Montgomery Avenue in Rosemont, PA. Lawrence Gallery.
