Lecture on Mexican Retablos, With Robin Farwell Gavin



TAOSThe Harwood Museum of Art announces the rescheduled Lecture on Mexican Retablos, with Robin Farwell Gavin, for Thursday November 9th at 7pm. This lecture will focus on the art and history of 18th century Mexican Retablos and will pay homage to the works currently on view in the Museum's "Retablo: Behind the Altar" exhibition featuring over 100 religious paintings and sculptures.

Robin Farwell Gavin is Senior Curator at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art in Santa Fe a position she has held since May 2003. Prior to then, she served as Senior Curator of Spanish Colonial Collectionsat the Museum of International Folk Art for fifteen years. Gavin received her M.A. in Art History from the University of New Mexico , Albuquerque , NM in1991 with a major in Spanish Colonial Art and her B.A. in Art History and Anthropology from Connecticut College, New London, CT in 1974.

Robin Gavin's exhibitions and museum projects have been extensive. Between 1991 and 2006, she served as Lead Curator for 16 museum exhibitions relating to topics in Spanish Colonial art. She served as Project Director (1998-2003) for Cerámica y Cultura: the Story of Spanish and Mexico Mayólica, an NEH-funded traveling exhibition originating at the Museum of International Folk Art, with an accompanying catalogue of 16 essays by scholars from Spain, Mexico and the U.S. From 1985-1990, Gavin was one of three curators working on the NEH-funded Hispanic Heritage Wing at the Museum of International Folk Art and conducting an NEA-funded outreach program to rural communities! in New Mexico identifying and providing information on artwork in Spanish Colonial churches.
