Drawing Center Presents Christine Taylor Patten
Christine Taylor Patten, "1197 A.D.,” 2004. Crow quill and ink on paper, 1 x 1 inch. Paper size 3 x 3 inches.

NEW YORK.- The Drawing Center will present Christine Taylor Patten: micro/macro: 261 drawings, a selection of works from the artist’s micro/macro series. Begun in 1998, this series consists of 2,001 works: a continuum of 2,000 one-by-one-inch drawings and 1 seven-by-twenty-four-feet drawing, on view through February 10, 2007. This exhibition will consist of 260 of the intricately wrought, crow quill and ink micros as well as a large scale study for the macro entitled imagine2. A progression of images begun with a single dot in space, the series evolves through gradual movement, each drawing in the sequence referring to the preceding one. Patten states, “At each point of change, the direction of the image is arbitrary, unplanned, evolving among infinite possibilities. Titled from year 1 A.D. through 2000 A.D. and beyond, the drawings in this longtime, ongoing series mirror and expand the investigations of over 30 years of my drawings examining wave motion and relationship…” While strictly non-referential, the drawings have been described as a “dynamic genesis” in which each new drawing presents itself as the product of instinctual formal decisions and but resonates as an exploration of the creative process itself.

Christine Taylor Patten (Santa Fe, NM) has had solo exhibitions of her drawings recently at the University of Leeds, UK (2006) and the Harwood Museum of Art, University of New Mexico, Taos, NM (2005). Her work has been presented in exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe, NM (2004, 1986, 1979); Exit Art, New York, NY (2001); Addison-Ripley Fine Art, Washington, DC (1993); and the Center for Contemporary Arts, Santa Fe, NM (1989, 1987). Patten has also published two books on the artist Georgia O'Keeffe: O'Keeffe at Abiquiu (1995) and Miss O'Keeffe (1992).
