NEW YORK, NY.- Bonnie Brennan, CEO of Christie’s, has appointed Alexander Rotter as Global President of Christie’s, effective immediately.

In his current role as Global Chairman of 20/21, Rotter has overseen many of the most groundbreaking moments in auction history and been instrumental in Christie’s growth and success. The role of Global President builds on this foundation and charges him with developing and driving the business at the highest level across all categories. A renowned and passionate expert and deal maker, Rotter will work collaboratively with Regional Presidents and Global Chairmen to develop innovative strategies for auction and private sales across individual objects and collections. Rotter will maintain his global responsibilities for 20/21 in addition to this new charge as Global President.

Bonnie Brennan said: “I am delighted that Alex will take on this new role as Global President, and I look forward to working with him very closely in this capacity. Alex’s creative, strategic and collaborative approach to 20/21 has been a key driver in our market leadership, and with clients increasingly collecting across all categories, this is the perfect time to expand his responsibilities.”

Alex Rotter commented: “It is a privilege to be entrusted with this new role and responsibility and I am excited to work even more closely with my talented colleagues around the world. The international market for exceptional art and objects continues to evolve and our clients rightly demand knowledge, creativity, experience and passion to guide them. Our teams across Christie’s deliver this on a daily basis, acting as tastemakers and adapting to the ever evolving way that people collect.”

Alex Rotter joined Christie’s in 2017, redefining the sale strategy for post war, contemporary, modern and impressionist art, by creating the 20/21 department recognizing collector’s desire to collect across categories and movements. Acknowledged as a global authority in Contemporary Art, his career highlights include overseeing the sale of Jeff Koon’s Rabbit from the Collection of S.I. Newhouse which sold for $91.1 million, setting a record for a living artist and Andy Warhol’s Shot Sage Blue Marilyn, which sold for $195 million and became the most expensive 20th century work sold at auction. He oversaw the 2017 sale of Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi, for $450 million, becoming the most expensive object ever sold at auction. Rotter has pioneered new formats for auction and private sales, creating the first global relay auction, livestreamed from Christie’s salesrooms in New York, London, Paris and Hong Kong, as well as creating the concept of the private auction.
