HOUSTON, TX.- The Board of Directors of Houston Center for Contemporary Craft announced a new strategic plan for 2025 – 2028.

In the summer of 2024, HCCC convened a strategic planning task force and engaged Trepwise Strategy Consulting to lead an intensive planning process. This phase of work included surveying the community and inviting craft-based artists, staff, and board members to participate in several focus groups. Led by Board Vice President Mariela Poleo and Executive Director Leila Cartier, the task force identified and synthesized the organization’s strengths and opportunities; examined the values that guide its daily efforts (creativity, meaningful and inclusive partnerships, excellence, and pushing boundaries); and explored other, leading craft-oriented institutions to determine its unique role and create a comprehensive and actionable three-year plan.

The measurable and attainable strategies outlined in the plan will advance HCCC’s updated vision, to be a dynamic hub at the intersection of craft and contemporary culture, and mission, to inspire and connect people to the art and process of making. At the heart of the plan is a deep commitment to contemporary craft. HCCC’s thought-provoking exhibitions, prestigious residency program, beloved Hands-on Houston events, and unique retail programming will continue to grow and be refined, with the intention of positioning craft and making at the forefront of cultural production in the years to come.

The plan’s strategic priorities will direct the work of the organization to:

• Amplify Impact through expanded partnerships and storytelling to reach new audiences and showcase the Center’s strengths.

• Lead the Field by elevating HCCC’s role as a leader in contemporary craft through innovative programs and engagement.

• Diversify Financial Strategy by strengthening funder relationships, developing new revenue streams, and planning for a capital campaign.

• Build the Future by planning and funding facility enhancements to meet long-term organizational needs.

Poleo and Cartier commented, “We are eager and ready to implement this new strategic plan and invite our friends, colleagues, and visitors to explore the ideas put forward as we align ourselves to realize HCCC’s future achievements. We also feel proud that our vision and guiding principles reflect not just a singular voice but the collective aspirations and enthusiasm of our community.”

HCCC Board President Judy Nyquist concluded, “As we approach our 25th anniversary, we are looking forward to this exciting new phase in the history of Houston Center for Contemporary Craft—a unique space where craft and contemporary culture collide.”
