Italian sculptor Massimiliano Pelletti features prominently with two critically acclaimed works: Gladiatore Borghese and Pink African Hermes. These monumental sculptures exemplify Pellettis distinctive fusion of classical form and contemporary materialitymarble and stone interrupted by crystalline veins, distortions, and colourful fissures that challenge viewers expectations of idealised beauty.
Inspired by the Hellenistic masterpiece Borghese Gladiator (3rd2nd century BCE), Gladiatore Borghese reinterprets a classical form through the lens of modernity, embracing themes of fragmentation and the passage of time. Pink African Hermes similarly showcases Pellettis philosophical exploration of antiquity, identity, and material, rendered through his virtuosic hand-carving and geological insight.
Aimé-Jules Dalou (French, 1838-1902), La Vérité Méconnue (Truth Revealed), Grand Modèle. Signed DALOU. Inscribed Susse Fres Edts Paris and circe perdue. Susse Fres Editeurs/ Paris foundry pastille on the back of the base. Numbered 4 and stamped BRONZE. Bronze with dark brown patina. Height: 13 ¼ (35 cm). Conceived circa 1900 and cast after 1902.
Pink African Hermes also marks a significant evolution in Pellettis practice as the first of his works to incorporate sculptural traditions beyond his Italian heritage. By fusing classical Western forms with references to other ancient artistic canons, Pelletti opens a new chapter in his exploration of global antiquity and identity. This powerful work offers a preview of a more dynamic and internationally resonant body of sculpture. More of these combination works will be shown in his upcoming solo exhibition at Bowman Sculptures Mayfair gallery during Frieze London in October 2025.
Pelletti, who lives and works in Pietrasantathe Tuscan town also home to Michelangelohas exhibited internationally, from Shanghai to Catanzaro. His recent solo museum exhibition, Versus (20242025) at the Palazzo Massimo National Roman Museum in Rome, placed his sculptures in dialogue with iconic classical antiquities such as the Lancellotti Discobolus and Crouching Venus. As the first contemporary artist invited to do so, Pelletti affirmed his position as one of the most compelling voices in sculpture today.
Dr. Melissa L. Gustin comments: Pellettis work shows how a passion for antiquity and the traditions of ones craft can be made incredibly contemporary
playing with our expectations for a classical form.
