Portuguese Surrealist Painter Mario Cesariny, 83, Dies |

LISBON, PORTUGAL.- Portuguese surrealist poet and painter Mario Cesariny de Vasconcelos, 83, died at his Lisbon home. He was suffering from cancer. Man stated that he was Portugal's leading surrealist. President Anibal Cavaco Silva described him as 'one of Portugal's biggest names in the 20th century.' Mario Cesariny was born on August 9, 1923 in Lisbon. He studied art and music in Lisbon. He then went to study art to Paris and met Andre Breton in 1947.
Mario Cesariny received the Grand Prize of Literary Life for his entire body of work in 2005. Portugal president Jorge Sampaio gave him the Grand Cross of the Order of Liberty. , bestowed by, then the president of Portugal.
