S.M.A.K. brings contemporary art from around the world into dialogue with its own collection, striving to reflect and respond to todays complex and fragmented world. Accessibility and inclusivity are central to the museum's mission.
Head of Programming, Collection and Research
(m/f/x, full-time, permanent position)
As Head of Programming, Collection and Research, you play a key role in the museum's artistic direction. You will translate the museum's mission into a powerful and coherent policy on exhibition programming, collection development and research. You will work closely with the general director, be part of the management team and lead the five-member team of curators and collection experts. You have a particular focus on cross-cutting operations within the museum.
Responsibilities include amongst other:
You are responsible for the museums artistic programme and policy
You are responsible for collection- and museum-related research and publications
You ensure the implementation of the policy plan and actively participate in the collection acquisition committee
You explore and initiate collaborations at local, national, and international levels, and develop a relevant network that you actively engage for the benefit of the museum
You draft policy plans and subsidy applications with an eye for content quality, inclusion, and financial feasibility
You manage the budget and planning of activities within your team and actively seek additional funding opportunities
You lead and coach your team with attention to workload, collaboration, and goal orientation. You foster an open, collegial, and people-centered working atmosphere
You safeguard the quality of the results and ensure the execution of the artistic vision
You work closely with other teams within the museum and actively contribute to an inclusive and diverse museum
You express yourself fluently in a multilingual context: you have excellent oral and written communication skills in English. You speak Dutch, can express yourself in Dutch or are willing to learn Dutch within a short period of time

Curator of Contemporary Art

As Curator of Contemporary Art, you are a driving force behind exhibitions and projects with a national and international character.
Responsibilities include, amongst other:
You develop and coordinate innovative art projects that align with the museum's vision and mission, and that contribute to an inclusive and diverse cultural practice
You represent S.M.A.K. nationally and internationally, and collaborate with artists, museums, galleries, and collectors
You conduct in-depth research, prepare well-founded project descriptions, manage realistic budgets, and ensure smooth implementation
You leverage your existing network of artists, curators, museums, and collectors to initiate collaborations, while actively expanding your network on a national and international level
