DESSAU-ROßLAU.- The Bauhaus Dessau is turning 100!

From Fri, 5 Sep to Sun, 7 Sep, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation is celebrating the start of the Bauhaus Dessau centennial with an extensive public programme under the motto To the Core. In and around the famous Bauhaus Building, in the Bauhaus Museum Dessau, in the Tierpark Dessau and at the scenic Kornhaus on the river, three days packed with concerts, dance, performances, film events, workshops and walks await the public.

On Thurs, 4 Sep, the centennial is being officially opened by the President of the European Commission, Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, together with the director of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Dr. Barbara Steiner, and the Minister President of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, Dr. Reiner Haseloff. Admission to the official ceremony is by invitation only. Accreditation of members of the press will begin with a special press invitation in late July.

In the public programme for the centennial opening, numerous internationally acclaimed artists will be in dialogue with the historic Bauhaus through a variety of artistic genres and expressions. The historical “Material Dances” of Oskar Schlemmer will be translated into the present in newly commissioned dance works performed on the Bauhaus Stage. The Italian composer and musician Piero Mottola will premiere his Voices of Bauhaus – a complex orchestral works of made of many voices (Fri, 5 Sep 25). Another highlight of the weekend is the joint festival of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau, including a public concert on the main stage in front of the Mausoleum, the poetic dance play Bauhaus Ghosts by dancer and choreographer Celia Millán and the brass band Frohe Zukunft from Halle. Light projections by the artist Philipp Geist will transform the space into a fantastical visual landscape (Sat, 6 Sep 25).

The concert series Pop Around @ Bauhaus of German broadcaster ZDF/3SAT will be held at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau for the first time on two evenings and will be transmitted live on national television letting everyone outside Dessau to take part, too. The line-up of international artists will be announced online in advance. The four concerts are being presented by well-known ZDF presenter Jo Schück (Sat + Sun, 6 + 7 Sep).

An educational programme, including workshops and the possibility to experiment with materials and technology on the Fab-Mobil bus will be available all weekend.
