MELBOURNE.- NGV Art School invites art lovers, educators and curious minds to explore a suite of in-person and online courses launching over the coming months. From a deep dive into Japanese visual culture and influential global artists to design history, colour theory and First Nations practice, each course provides opportunities to engage with art in new ways through the NGV Collection guided by NGV educators, curators and expert facilitators.

Art & The World: Japan: Four Week Course
Mon 25 Aug - Mon 15 Sep, 6.00-8.00pm | NGV International


This brand new four-week evening course explores Japan’s enduring artistic and cultural legacy through the NGV Collection and the exhibition Kimono. Over four in person sessions, participants will examine how centuries of meticulous craftsmanship, ritual, reinvention and radical creativity have shaped Japan’s visual identity and global influence. Facilitated by a specialist NGV educator, and featuring insights from NGV curators and cultural experts, the course offers a rich, multidimensional understanding of Japanese art history. Includes exclusive after-hours access to Kimono and all course materials.

Online Course: The Art of Writing

Led by celebrated author Cate Kennedy, this self-guided course uses the NGV Collection as a springboard for creative writing. Through weekly video modules, readings and interactive activities, participants will experiment with poetry, narrative and descriptive techniques that bring art to life on the page. Created for beginners and seasoned writers alike, this course encourages close observation and creative interpretation, using art to spark imagination and personal expression.

The ever-popular self-guided online course explores the role of colour across art, science, culture and psychology through NGV Collection works. Led by NGV curators, research experts and special guests, the course covers topics including colour theory, the history of pigments, the emotional and symbolic power of colour, and its influence on perception and design. Ideal for artists, educators and anyone fascinated by the colour-filled world we live in.

Get to know ten ground-breaking artists from the NGV Collection whose influence has helped shape art history and contemporary practice. Spanning cultures, time periods and artistic movements, this course introduces key themes, challenges and contributions of figures including Emily Kame Kngwarray, Suzanne Valadon, Francis Bacon, Katsushika Hokusai, Guerrilla Girls and more. Explore their lives, techniques and lasting legacies, and reflect on why their work remains relevant today.

Twentieth Century Design: One-Day Intensive

Join NGV curators and educators for a full-day in person deep dive into twentieth century design and the people who defined it. Through lectures and guided gallery tours, participants will explore the work of iconic designers including Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi and Marc Newson, unpacking their influence on contemporary living and aesthetics. The course considers how design has responded to technological innovation, social change and cross-cultural exchange and how it continues to shape our world today.

Explore the diversity and power of First Peoples art and design from across Australia in this introductory online course. Featuring works from the NGV Collection, the course highlights artists' connections to Country, culture, and community past, present and future. Participants will learn about the stories behind key works, discover a range of traditional and contemporary practices, and reflect on the important role of art in cultural continuation, resistance, and renewal. The course includes contributions from artists Claudia Moodoonuthi, James Tylor, Jenna Lee, Jonathan Jones, Keemon Williams, Maree Clarke and more.
