PROVINCETOWN, MASS.- The Provincetown Community Compact announces the Dune Shack Artists and Writers in Residence for 2025 in the Cape Cod National Seashore. The juried process for visual artists for three, three-week stays selected these artists: River Aragon, a visual and performance artist, farmer and land steward from Florence, MA who receives the David Bethuel Jamieson emerging artist of color award, with a $500 fellowship; Kelli Scott Kelly, a visual artist exploring the hybrid beings and magic in the natural world, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, also receives a $500 fellowship; and Provincetown artist Valerie Isaac, who paints the natural landscape and teaches at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and Castle Hill Center for the Arts.

Writers selected by lottery for one-week stays are Eric Knutson from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and John Lang from New York City. The Compact also offers two weeks for writers from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown.

The Compact residencies at C-Scape and Fowler Dune Shacks are scheduled from April through November and open to the general public, with applications due January 15, 2026. thecompact.org/dune-shacks.html

The Compact will continue to underwrite a week for a Native American in collaboration with the Native Land Conservancy (NLC) and continue its voluntary Honor Tax request for all applicants (contributions are tax-deductible). The Honor Tax is an opportunity to move beyond land acknowledgement and offer financial support for the acquisition, use and respect for unceded land.

The two historic dune shacks The Compact manages are located in the Peaked Hill National Register Historic District in the Seashore. The shacks are primitive — no electricity or indoor plumbing — and isolated, allowing for uninterrupted solitude and refuge. The Compact maintains and manages these shacks under an agreement with the Seashore.

The Provincetown Community Compact, Inc. (The Compact), celebrating its 33rd year, was established in 1993 as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization by artist Jay Critchley. It is organized as a community-building and philanthropic organization to support artists and the vitality of the community.

The mission of The Compact is to advance the health and cultural well-being of the community of Provincetown and the Outer Cape – its people, the natural environment and the economy. Additional initiatives include: The Swim for Life (set for September 6, 2025), the Think-ubator program, which has birthed eight non-profits, Prayer Ribbons, and its new, Underrepresented Communities project, and special community projects.
