SYDNEY.- Sullivan+Strumpf announced their representation of London-based Australian artist Jess Cochrane, and her premiere solo exhibition at their Sydney gallery in February 2026.
A Melbourne native, currently living in London, Jess Cochrane creates figurative oil paintings drawn from the everyday, with a focus on familiar scenes and the things we as humans tend to collect and return to.
Her compositions often weave stories of shared rituals such as gatherings and meals, with nods to Impressionist artists such as Cezanne, Monet and Gauguin evident in her expressive brushwork, approach to colour and depiction of group scenes.
Yet Cochranes works are unmistakably grounded in the present, with consumerism, pop culture and fashion appearing as thematic threads. Her contrasting of contemporary detail with echoes of an Impressionistic past, reflecting a cyclical perspective on the intersection of art and society.
Cochranes practice is guided by her photography, acting as a catalogue of shared memories and recent history. Drawing from her digital archive she recreates carefully selected often intimate scenes; recreating the joy and glimmer found in small, relatable moments.
From sunny poolside gatherings to casual encounters, and still life paintings of perfectly ripe oranges: Cochranes paintings revel in ideas of connection and identity; tenderly highlighting the subtle complexities of living and encouraging us to think about the ways we see, remember and engage with each other.
