COLOGNE.- In addition to Galerie Karsten Greve Cologne's main exhibition Pierrette Bloch Essence, the gallery is presenting a curated accrochage with works by Yiorgos Kordakis, Leiko Ikemura, Norbert Prangenberg, Gideon Rubin, Georgia Russell, Kathleen Jacobs and Claire Morgan. In this accrochage, photographic, painterly and sculptural works engage in a multi-layered dialogue between lightness and intensity, calmness and dynamic.
Yiorgos Kordakis Global Summer series draws the viewer into a sunlit scene. Using Polaroid photography, he captures moments with immediacy and authenticity. The softly blurred contours and pastel colors give the image a fleeting, almost nostalgic quality that enhances the sense of summer warmth and lightness.
Gideon Rubins distinctive style is marked by muted tones, expressive brushwork, and faceless figures that evoke both intimacy and distance. In White Singlet, these elements come together in a quiet, contemplative composition. The anonymity of the subject invites viewers to project their own memories and emotions onto the work. Rubins practice explores themes of identity, memory, and absence creating paintings that are as much about what is left out as what is shown.
In Leiko Ikemuras Wind Wesen, delicate abstract forms and translucent layers of color gracefully evoke the gentle motion of a passing breeze. Painted in tempera on jute, the open weave of the fabric allows the pigments to seep into the surface, resulting in a subtle, soft texture. The abstract silhouette combined with the gentle color palette conveys a profound sense of lightness, permeability, and transience like a spirit molded by the wind itself.
The works from Norbert Prangenberg's series Bilder are richly coloured, which is characteristic for the late paintings of the artist's last ten years of artistic work. The pastose oil paint partially extends beyond the edges of the wood, giving the small formats a relief-like character. Depending on how the viscous mixture of paint is applied, the appearance of the works vary between dynamic tension and gentle harmony.
