Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung celebrates 25 years with a new book on glass in contemporary art
About Glass. Contemporary Sculpture and Installations.

MUNICH.- To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung is publishing a richly illustrated book on glass as a material in contemporary art. Mostly associated with design and craftsmanship, glass has evolved in recent decades from a neglected material to an increasingly popular and congenial medium for art. The Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung has promoted this development through exhibitions, research, and the building of a collection.

The volume presents a selection of around 50 artists from different geographical and cultural backgrounds – some internationally renowned, others previously unknown or newly discovered. From spectacular small objects to installations, they reveal the diverse artistic practice of working with glass.

About Glass presents works by Monica Bonvicini, Tony Cragg, Carlos Garaicoa, Mona Hatoum, Shirazeh Houshiary, Laure Prouvost, Kiki Smith, as well as important representatives of the studio glass movement. They all use the special characteristics of glass as a material: its clarity, reflectivity, and fragility; its spectrum of colors; its immediacy and haptic qualities; its narrative potential and emotional aura.

With its numerous illustrations and texts by experts, the publication is intended as a contribution to the discourse on glass as a material in contemporary art.

“I am delighted that the book About Glass. Contemporary Sculpture and Installations is being published during the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung’s anniversary year, bringing to light and paying tribute to artists who work with the unique material of glass and their exciting works. Like the exhibition Future Horizons, which opens in October, this volume is an invitation to see and think beyond the usual.” -- Dr. Eva-Maria Fahrner Tutsek, Chairwoman of the board, Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung

"The book captivates with the surprising variety of technical sophistication involved in working with glass and, at the same time, with the meaning that makes these works so exciting and has established the reputation of glass as an artistic medium. It is truly unique that the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung has collected all these works over the past 25 years and now documents them in this extraordinary book." -- Dr. Petra Giloy-Hirtz, Curator
