EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND.- TheFruitmarket Gallery Dada’s Boys: Identity and Play in Contemporary Art was published earlier on in the year to coincide with the acclaimed exhibition of the same title. On the 27 November it won a runner up prize in the fifth annual The Art Newspaper & AXA Art prize for the best exhibition catalogue of the year. There were four runners up each receiving quarter-page advertisements in The Art Newspaper, worth £825.

The Judges said of the catalogue: ‘Dada’s Boys is about the crop of mostly male artists working today in the spirit of Dada (Matthew Barney, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Paul McCarthy, Martin Kippenberger and others.) The design of this small book is suitably stylish but also navigable, unlike some contemporary art catalogues.’

Another winning publication is Callum Innes: From Memory, which was published to coincide with The Fruitmarket Gallery’s successful Autumn 2006 Callum Innes exhibition. From Memory was co-published with German publishing house, Hatje Cantz and has been commended along with 44 other books for ‘The Best German Book Design’. Entry for this prestigious competition was extended to all publishers, book designers, private presses, colleges and to all institutions and firms in any way involved in book production. Foreign publishers could only submit books if the production had taken place solely in Germany.

942 books were submitted and at the end of November 2006 the Jury selected 45 books for an award. All 45 books (which range from exhibition catalogues to school and academic books) will be exhibited at the International Book Fair in Frankfurt in October 2007 and are automatically entered into ‘The Most Beautiful Books in the World’ competition. With these accolades behind them The Fruitmarket Gallery is looking forward to another successful year of publishing in 2007.
