NEW YORK, NY.- The Tibor de Nagy Gallery announced the representation of artist Matthew Weinstein. The gallery will host a solo exhibition of his recent paintings in the spring of 2026 and present his work at this year's Art Basel Miami Beach.
Matthew Weinstein has been working and exhibiting in New York and Europe widely since the late 1980s. He is known for his multi-disciplinary approach to art making. His mediums range from painting and sculpture to innovative computer animation. His practice is philosophical and idea-driven, as well as committed to a deep exploration of form. Weinstein blends technology, mythology, and pop culture, to create hypnotic and uncanny works.
His most recent paintings translate memories, emotions, and sense impressions into fields of color. Focusing on an abstraction of the sun and the horizon, each painting represents a lost and then recalled place and time, revealing the complexity of memory. With careful craftsmanship, Weinstein layers precise daubs of oil paint that recall Post Impressionist techniques and the varied intensities of pixels. The overall effect is strikingly visceral. Weinstein speaks of the unifying aim of these works: We create temporary narratives to explain ourselves to ourselves, and sometimes to others.
Born and based in New York City, Weinstein earned a B.A. from Columbia University in 1987. His first solo exhibition was at Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Los Angeles, in 1989. From 1994 to 2013, he exhibited at Sonnabend Gallery, New York, and has recently had several solo exhibitions at Baldwin Gallery, Aspen. A survey exhibition was held at the Mint Museum in 2012, and an exhibition of his films was presented at the Kunsthalle Vienna in 2004. He is in many notable museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Orlando Museum, The Yale University Art Gallery, The Denver Museum, The Parrish Museum, The Bavarian State Collection, The Rubell Family Collection, the Perez Art Museum, The Nassau County Museum, The New School University Art Collection, among others.
Weinstein is also a writer and art critic, with reviews and articles published in Artforum, Art News, and other publications.
