DUBLIN, IRELAND.- The National Gallery of Ireland presents Turner and the Traditionalists, on view through January 31, 2007. Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) is admired as one of the great watercolourists; for his technique, imaginative response to nature and portrayal of the English and Continental landscape. His life coincided with the new status of watercolour and increase in its exponents. With the National Gallery's broad collection of British works on paper, this exhibition offers an opportunity to compare its Turners with some of the artists who continued in more traditional methods, while occasionally adopting some of his innovations. Treated thematically, the exhibition will consider aspects such as the impact of the Royal Academy, Turner's aspirations as an illustrator and landscapist and his influence on his contemporaries. His response to light observation of everyday life and use of new materials will also be examined. Included in the display will be works by Edward Dayes, Copley Fielding, William Alexander and Nicholas Pocock. The exhibition will be accompanied by a brochure written by Adrian Le Harivel.
