BEVERLY, MA.- Montserrat College of Art Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of an emerging Boston-based artist, Camilo Ramirez. His photo exhibit, On the Ground, will be in the 301 Gallery, 301 Cabot St., through February 8, 2007. This exhibit is part of a series of emerging, Boston-based artists featured at Montserrat’s 301 Gallery.

“At the beginning of each semester, we offer a local artist the opportunity to have their first solo show in the Boston area,” explains Gallery Director Leonie Bradbury. “The artists are not just invited to have an exhibition, but they are encouraged to be an active part of the curatorial process. As a result, they transform the space and present their body of work as they envision it.” Past artists featured in the series are Tim Murdoch, Liz Nofziger, and George Rosa.

Ramirez’ series captures urban views of Boston. With a careful, sympathetic eye and masterful cropping, he renders worn and ordinary urban sites beautiful. In his youth, Ramirez skateboarded around the suburbs of Los Angeles and then Miami, and he recreates that feeling of exploration and play with his camera. He dwells on nondescript sites such as parking lots, highway ramps, and fences, honing in on details in a manner that somehow heightens puddles, highway ramps, and trash to subjects worthy of aesthetic contemplation.

Ramirez teaches photography and graphic design at Emerson College and the Massachusetts College of Art. He received his MFA in Photography from Mass Art in 2006, and this will be his first solo exhibit in New England. He has been included in numerous group shows in the Florida and Boston areas, including Mission Hill Artists Collective: Annual May Exhibition 2006 at the Parker Hill Library in Roxbury, MA; Meet Me in Miami, a special exhibit for “Art Miami 2006” in Miami, FL; and Stranger than Fiction at Doran Gallery in Boston, MA.
