LONDON, ENGLAND.- The National Media Museum presents The British Landscape - Photographs by John Davies, on view through February 4, 2007. John Davies has been making beautiful yet provocative photographs of the British Landscape since 1979. His work focuses on the impact of human settlement and industry on the land, concerns that echo those of PH Emerson's from almost a century earlier.
Making its UK debut at NMPFT, this exhibition features Davies' finest work from the last 27 years . The British Landscape exhibition will be accompanied by a lavish large format book published by Chris Boot. Born in Sedgefield, County Durham in 1949, John Davies has been photographing the landscape of Britain since 1979. His large-scale, finely printed black and white photographs are usually taken from a high viewpoint looking down, producing beautifully detailed panoramas of vast areas of land.
Davies is interested in telling stories through his photographs; about social and industrial history, progress and change. This collection of some of his finest work shows his concerns develop from the brooding rural landscapes of Scotland and the Lake District, to the industrial and post-industrial landscapes that typify Britain today.
'I've always thought it important to make beautiful pictures that draw people in, so I decided to use a romantic style - or, rather, to take romantic pictures in unromantic places.' John Davies. British Journal of Photography. 28 June 2006
Davies' working methods are meticulous and he is constantly striving to improve his techniques in order to improve the qualities of his work. He uses a 5x4 inch format Cambo Wide camera with a 65mm lens and a 6x9cms format Mamiya Press camera with a 50mm lens, and prints his photographs in his own darkroom. The British Landscape exhibition consists of 20x24 inch prints made on Agfa Classic fibre based paper and 30x40 prints made on Ilford Multigrade paper.
The book The British Landscape: John Davies published by Chris Boot is available from the Museum Shop for £30 (rrp £30). The book includes all the photographs in this exhibition accompanied by Davies' own fascinating and informative notes on the social and historical background to the places and scenes featured.
