CHICAGO, IL.- The February UBS 12 x 12 New Artists/New Work exhibit presents the emotive power and experience of noise through Hannum’s video projection of the drone band, Sunn O))) (pronounced “sun”) at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago, opening at First Fridays on February 2 and running through February 25, 2007. Hannum explores two main facets of live music noise: the performance itself and the amplifiers that enable extreme volume. The amplifier has the ability to generate, respond, or remain mute, always with the potential to deafen the audience. Hannum is intrigued by the striking ritualistic elements of a performance and the audience’s reaction and surrender to it. In the Sunn O))) recording, amidst the droning chords that vibrate the chest cavity, the fog, and surreal light display, Hannum captures intimate audience responses, movements, and the rogue camera flashes that alter the video frame and narrative of the experience. Sunn O)))’s performance is documented by three floortoceiling projections. The center projection is unaltered, while the two side projections are mirrored and visually manipulated.

To accompany the exhibit, four local drone bands perform on Target Free Tuesday evenings at 6 pm at the MCA. February 6: White/Light; February 13: Lichens (before Hannum’s gallery talk); and February 20: Locrian and Bird Show.

Terence Hannum received his BA in philosophy and studio art from Florida Southern College in 2001, and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in painting in 2004. He leads a guided gallery tour of his exhibition on Tuesday, February 13, at 6:30 pm.

February’s lust theme for First Fridays is the second of the seven deadly sins themes for First Fridays. The MCA invites guests to listen to the sounds of DJ Ian Hixxx, make Valentines at the creation station, send and receive love notes at the digital love post office, and mingle at the popular iMac G5 digital dating bar. The after party takes place at Club 720, located at 720 N. Wells. Tickets for First Fridays include museum admission and complimentary Puck’s hors d’oeuvres, and are available the evening of the event for $15 ($7 for MCA members). Guests must be 21 or older to enter.
