JACKSON, WY.- Jackson Hole Art Auction held two successful auctions last week: Attainable Art for the Emerging Collector concluded February 11th, and the live online auction was broadcast on February 12th. 91% percent of the 435 lots were sold, realizing over $1 million in sales.

JHAA Managing Director Kevin Doyle led the live sale with energy and precision, sparking lively bidding throughout the auction.

The Winter 2026 lineup featured fresh-to-market artworks from important private collections, including fine examples of Cowboy, Sporting, Wildlife, and Native American art and sculpture. The range reflects JHAA’s reputation as one of the country’s leading venues for Western art.

Category Highlights

Indigenous Subjects

Both sales brought strong sales results for bronze sculptures, and artwork featuring Indigenous subjects, both classic and contemporary, performed well. The top-selling lot across both sales was a cast of Cyrus Edwin Dallin’s Appeal to the Great Spirit (bronze, ed. 92, 20 1/2 x 21 x 13 3/4 in., Estimate $1,000-$2,000) from The Valley Ranch, Jackson, WY: Residence of Laurance S. Rockefeller and John D. Rockefeller IV, which brought a whopping $48,000, 2300% over the high estimate. Another bronze achieving strong results was Ed Mell’s Procession (bronze, ed. 10 x 11 1/4 x 5 1/8 in., Estimate: $4,000-$6,000), selling for more than double the high estimate at $15,000.

John Hauser’s Another Shot from 1906, (gouache on paper, 13 1/2 x 9 1/2 in., Estimate: $15,000-$25,000) sold for 32% above the high estimate, bringing $33,000. The vibrant, action-packed Warrior on a Galloping Horse (acrylic and oil on canvas, 58 x 46 in., Estimate: $8,000-12,000) by highly-sought-after artist Malcolm Furlow, fetched $21,600. Crow Warrior, a 1993 oval portrait by John Nieto (acrylic on canvas, 20 x 16 in., Estimate: $8,000-12,000) realized $15,600. Aaron Gunn Pyle’s Indian Village (egg tempera on masonite, 13 x 19 in., Estimate: $4,000-$6,000) exceeded it’s high estimate by 440%, selling for $10,800.

Western

Paintings by acclaimed Western artist Bill Anton’s saw spirited bidding: Where the Old Ways Are the Best Ways (oil on board, 24 x 30 in., Estimate: $10,000-$20,000) sold 72% above the high estimate at $33,000, and Summer Silhoutte (oil on board, 20 x 30 in., Estimate: $7,000-$10,000) sold 32% above the high estimate at $13,200. John Bye’s photorealistic Winter in the West (oil on canvas, 30 x 40 in., Estimate: $8,000-$12,000) brought double the high estimate at $24,000. A lithograph on paper by Thomas Hart Benton, Wyoming Autum (17 3/4 x 24 in., Estimate: $4,000-$6,000) commanded $13,200, 120% over the high estimate.

Landscape

A Peter Hurd watercolor from the Bud Adams KSA corporate collection, Before Sunrise, which has been off the market since 1988 (watercolor on paper, 21 3/4 x 27 1/4 in., Estimate: $8,000-$12,000) attracted collectors early with competitive pre-auction bidding and realized $14,400. Louisa McElwain’s Tierra Madre (oil on canvas, 20 x 28 in., Estimate: $7,000-$10,000) sold well over the high estimate at $14,400. A small gem from Wilson Hurley, Pleasant Creek Canyon, Sleeping Rainbow Ranch (oil on board, 12 x 16 in., Estimate: $3,000-$5,000) brought more than double the high estimate at $13,200.

Wildlife

Moose on the Hoback Rim, from beloved Jackson Hole local Tucker Smith (oil on canvas, 9 x 12 in., Estimate: $9,000-$12,000) fetched a strong result of $19,200. Malcolm Furlow’s colorful Electric Elk (acrylic and oil on canvas, 40 x 40 in., Estimate: $2,000-$4,000) sold for $10,800, 170% above the high estimate. The two fantastical bronze works in the sale from Colombian sculptor, Nano Lopez, shattered their pre-sale estimates: Tina (Giraffe) (bronze, ed. 48/320 , 14 1/4 x 12 x 8 3/4 in., Estimate: $2,000-$4,000) sold for more than double the high estimate at $13,200, and Catfish Lily (bronze, ed. 131/260, 18 1/8 x 31 x 10 1/2 in., Estimate: $4,000-$6,000) sold 70% above the high estimate at $10,200.

Additional notable lots include Tom Lovell’s charming and nostalgic illustration for True Magazine, Tying Flies (oil on canvas, 22 1/2 x 21 in., Estimate: $5,000-$8,000), brought an impressive $19,200. A bronze bas relief set from Glenna Goodacre, Monday–Friday (Estimate: $5,000-$7,000), sold 191% above the high estimate at $20,400.
