Oberlin Museum Launches Sunday Afternoon Art Discussions |
|

|
OBERLIN, OH.- The Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College will begin holding regularly scheduled object talks on Sunday afternoons beginning February 18 at 2:00 pm. Each week, Sunday AMAM visitors will have the chance to listen to one of Oberlin College’s student docents or community volunteers give an in-depth discussion on a single work displayed at the museum. These talks, followed by a brief Q & A period, are scheduled to last about half an hour.
The series starts off this Sunday with a talk by Megan Kyle (OC ’10), who will discuss the AMAM’s renowned work, St. Sebastian Tended by Irene (1625) by Hendrick ter Brugghen. This work has been in the news recently, as it was just named one of the “100 European Masterpieces in American Museums” in the recent book, Only in America, by Pierre Rosenberg – former Director and President of the Musée du Louvre. It has long been a favorite of visitors to the AMAM.
Another AMAM favorite, View of Venice: The Ducal Palace, Dogana, and Part of San Giorgio (1841), by the English painter J. M. W. Turner, will be discussed the following Sunday, February 25th. Starting at 2pm, Holly Sloofman (OC ’09) will discuss Turner’s life and career.
Most Sundays after that will focus on other works in the AMAM collection – both longtime favorites and new acquisitions. The public is invited to attend these talks, which are offered free of charge.
The Allen Memorial Art Museum is open to the public. Admission is free. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sunday 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays and major holidays. Free educational or group guided tours may be arranged by calling the museum’s Education Office at (440) 775-8671.
