Smithsonian Names Anne Van Camp Director

WASHINGTON, DC.- The Smithsonian Institution has named Anne Van Camp as the director of the Smithsonian Institution Archives, effective March 5. "We are fortunate to have someone with Anne’s outstanding qualifications join the Smithsonian team," said Sheila Burke, Smithsonian deputy secretary and chief operating officer. "Her enthusiasm for working with collections and her substantial record of professional accomplishments ensure that the Smithsonian Institution Archives will have dynamic leadership in the coming years."

From 1996 until her appointment as the director of the Smithsonian Institution Archives, Van Camp served as manager of the member programs at the Research Libraries Group Inc., where she planned, designed and implemented collaborative programs and projects to improve access to research resources to the 150-member institutions of the RLG. From 1989 to 1996, she was the director of Archives at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace at Stanford University. Van Camp also served as the vice president for Information Services at the Chase Manhattan Corp. in New York from 1979 to 1989.

Van Camp earned her bachelor’s (1973) and master’s degrees (1977) from the University of Cincinnati. She replaces Tom Soapes, who has served as acting director of the Archives since 2005.

The Smithsonian Institution Archives serves the Smithsonian community, scholars and the public by evaluating, acquiring and preserving the records of the Institution and related documentary materials. The Archives develops policies and provides guidance for managing the Institution’s vast archival collections; offers a range of reference, research and record-keeping services; and creates products that promote understanding of the Smithsonian and its history.
