Walk into a newly finished bathroom, and your eyes usually travel straight through the glass.
The wall tile, shower niche, and natural light remain visually connected. The floor is not broken up by a heavy frame. Frameless glass makes the room feel lighter and more open.
Removing the frame, however, does not remove the work it once helped to do.
The door still has to open and close. Adjacent glass panels cannot hit each other. Water still needs to remain inside the shower. A successful frameless design handles those practical needs without allowing the edge details to dominate the glass.
What the frame used to handle
A framed enclosure can locate and protect the glass edges, cover part of the surrounding gaps, and absorb small variations during installation.
Frameless glass offers less cover.
A moving door needs enough clearance to pass the fixed panel without contact. Its bottom edge also needs to clear the finished floor as it moves across a slight slope or uneven surface.
From across the room, those gaps appear as little more than thin lines. Up close, they have to allow the door to move while maintaining a clear boundary between the wet and dry areas.
The glass dimensions therefore cannot be considered in isolation.
Before the glass is ordered, the showerhead position, door swing, finished floor height, and drainage slope need to be reviewed together. With fewer visible components, there is usually less room to correct those relationships after installation.
Water does not follow the outline of the glass
From the bathroom doorway, the eye reads the shape of the enclosure.
Water responds to the gaps, slopes, and points of contact.
When the showerhead faces the door, spray may hit the joint between the moving door and the fixed panel. When it faces the side wall, water may first land on the glass and then run down toward the bottom edge.
The floor continues to influence that path.
The clearance beneath one end of the door may differ slightly from the other. It can be difficult to notice while standing in the room, but water repeatedly finds the lower or more open route.
Each part of the enclosure faces a different condition. The bottom edge deals with water running down the glass. A side edge has to help control water without interfering with the door, while a glass-to-glass joint has its own contact point.
This is why
frameless shower sealing is better considered as part of the overall glass detail, rather than as a clear strip added after the enclosure is installed. The glass layout, door movement, water direction, and drainage need to work together before the edge profile can do its part.

The finished installation will not match the drawing exactly
A drawing may specify the glass thickness, bottom clearance, and panel gaps precisely.
Small differences often appear on site. The finished tile floor may sit a millimeter or two higher than expected. The glass may shift slightly during installation. None of these variations is large on its own, but together they can change the actual clearances around the door.
The flexible sealing fin, or lip, is often where that difference becomes noticeable.
If it is slightly too short, it may not cover the finished gap. If it is too long, it can brush against the floor whenever the door opens. The contact may be light at first. Over time, the flexible edge may bend to one side, and the door may no longer move as smoothly.
That does not necessarily point to a faulty product. More often, the dimensions shown on the drawing no longer match the conditions created on site.
When the finished gap differs from the drawing, installers need to compare the actual glass thickness, fitting position, and profile rather than choose by appearance alone. The real test comes after installation
On installation day, the glass is clean, the door is aligned, and the floor is dry.
Daily use gives a clearer answer.
The door should open without rubbing against the floor and close without extra force. The same tile outside the enclosure should not remain wet after every shower. The glass edge should not need an increasingly visible series of add-on parts to keep the area usable.
When those details work as intended, few people stop to examine the edge of the glass.
