BERLIN.- Wars, conflicts and environmental disasters are destroying cities and habitats across the globe. Reconstruction is an urgent task; millions of people need shelter, space and safety. This autumn’s exhibition and events programme at the Akademie der K黱ste, entitled “Metaxy : Between Destruction and Reconstruction”, focuses on that uncertain moment when it is not yet clear how societies will deal with loss, guilt and memory – and how they will shape the future. The term metaxy, ancient Greek for “between”, refers to the state of tension between destruction and reconstruction, past and future.

The Akademie building on Hanseatenweg and Berlin’s Hansaviertel district itself are significant examples of reconstruction following the destruction of the Second World War. Starting from a critical exploration of the traces to be found at and around the site of the Akademie der K黱ste, the exhibition links local experiences with global perspectives from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gaza, Namibia, Poland, Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Ukraine and the USA. Through their works, artists and spatial practitioners open up perspectives that emerge in the in-between.

A programme of talks, music and performances will be held to explore the exhibition’s three thematic focuses: Houses – Soils – Times. The project is accompanied by an extensive outreach programme . A special issue of the magazine ARCH+ documents and explores the central questions in greater depth.
