LOS ANGELES, CA.- Nate D. Sanders Auctions is set to auction the most coveted book in the Harry Potter canon: a first edition, first printing hardback of J.K. Rowling's debut novel, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone." This particular copy is one of only 500 hardback editions from the initial printing, making it far scarcer and more collectible than the softcover edition published concurrently.

Shortly after its debut in June 1997, the novel soared to the top of book lists voted on by children, prompting adults across the publishing world to take notice. The phenomenon of Harry Potter only grew stronger over the following years, as more Millennial children aged into reading the book and its sequels, famously devouring each new installment the day it was released. "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" is now firmly ensconced as a classic of children's literature and stands as the second most successful children's book of all time — making this scarce hardback survivor a physical artifact of that phenomenon's very beginning.

All first printing points are present and accounted for. The copyright page reads "First published in Great Britain in 1997," with the author credited as "Joanne Rowling" rather than J.K., and no space between illustrator Thomas Taylor's name and the copyright date ("Taylor1997"). The full number line, "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1," remains intact, as does the original 10.99 pound price printed on the rear board, along with the Wendy Cooling quote featured on the front board and the telltale misspelling of "Philospher's" on the rear board. Additional early printing hallmarks include the repetition of "1 wand" on page 53 and "highchair" on page 8.





Because the 500 hardback copies were produced specifically for library distribution, the number of surviving examples is unknown, though experts believe it to be significantly lower than the original print run. All 500 copies were issued without a dust jacket, a feature that would not be introduced until the third printing. This edition measures 5.25'' x 8'' and spans 223 pages. The book has undergone light expert restoration — not uncommon for library-distributed copies — including a rebacked spine with the original spine laid down and board retouching. The front free endpaper is missing, and there is light buckling to the pages near the end of the book. Overall, the book presents in very good plus condition, retaining a withdrawn library stamp confirming its decommissioned status.

A hallmark of children's literature, this surviving hardback exemplar remains one of the few copies still available to collectors — a rare opportunity to own a piece of publishing history from the very beginning of the wizarding world's rise to global phenomenon.
