Maras: The Culture of Violence at Casa de América
Isabel Muñoz.

MADRID, SPAIN.- Casa de América presents Maras: The Culture of Violence, on view through May 27, 2007. In this exhibition the photographer Isabel Muñoz presents her own particular vision of the Maras, Salvadorian gangs, in order to deal with a wider theme: violence. In order to do so, she travelled to El Salvador in 2006 to take photographs of the people involved. Her work consisted of not being judgemental, but rather of visiting, seeing, getting to know and trying to understand in order to relate the phenomena of gangs in this country. In just two trips she has achieved something that few photographers manage: work in prisons in direct contact with the prisoners.
