How Moisture and Rain Affect a Wood Fence in Seattle



Wood fences in Seattle face a moisture challenge that fences in drier climates simply do not. The region receives rain for much of the year, and the mild temperatures mean that damp conditions persist without the hard freezes that would otherwise slow wood decay. A wood fence built for this climate needs the right materials, proper construction, and ongoing attention to hold up over time.



What does prolonged moisture do to fence boards?



Wood absorbs water. When a fence board stays damp for days or weeks at a time, the wood fibers swell and soften. As the board eventually dries during a stretch of summer weather, for example it shrinks back. Each cycle of swelling and shrinking opens small cracks in the wood grain, and those cracks allow water to penetrate deeper on the next wet cycle.



Over several seasons, this repeated expansion and contraction weakens the surface of the board. The grain lifts, the surface becomes rough, and boards that started out smooth develop a fuzzy, splintered texture that signals early deterioration.



The bottom edges of fence boards are the most vulnerable because they are closest to the ground, where splashback from rain and contact with damp soil or grass keep the wood wet long after the upper portions have dried. This is why rot almost always starts at the bottom of a fence and works its way up.



How does fungal decay develop in a wet climate?



Fungal organisms that cause wood rot need three things to grow: moisture, oxygen, and moderate temperatures. Seattle's climate provides all three for roughly eight months of the year. The mild winters rarely drop cold enough to freeze the moisture inside the wood, which means decay organisms stay active through the fall, winter, and spring.



The first visible sign of fungal activity is usually discoloration dark streaks or blotchy patches that do not wash off. These surface colonies are feeding on the wood fibers and breaking down the cell structure. At this stage, the wood may still feel firm to the touch, but the decay process is already underway beneath the surface.



Left unchecked, the fungus moves deeper into the wood until the affected area becomes soft and spongy. A screwdriver pressed into rotting wood sinks in with little resistance. Once rot reaches this stage, the board or post cannot be saved and needs to be replaced. Fence posts take the most abuse because they are partially buried in soil that stays wet for months. The section of the post at and just below the ground line is the most common failure point. Bottom rails sit close to the ground and collect moisture from rain splashing off the soil surface. What materials hold up best in Seattle's climate?



Western red cedar is the traditional choice for fences in the Pacific Northwest, and for good reason. Cedar heartwood contains natural oils that resist fungal decay and insect damage. A cedar fence will weather to a silver-gray color over time, but the wood underneath remains sound for years even without applied finishes. The natural resistance is in the heartwood the darker inner wood not the lighter sapwood, so fence boards cut primarily from heartwood last significantly longer.



Pressure-treated lumber offers decay resistance through chemical preservatives forced into the wood under pressure. Modern treatments use copper-based compounds effective against both rot and insects. Pressure-treated posts are a common choice even on cedar fences because posts are buried in soil where moisture exposure is highest and natural resistance alone may not be enough.



Regardless of species, a penetrating water-repellent stain slows moisture absorption and extends the life of the wood. Film-forming finishes like paint can trap moisture behind the coating if the wood was not completely dry when applied, accelerating hidden decay. Stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners resist corrosion and maintain their holding power through years of rain exposure.
