SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY.- Schick Art Gallery at Skidmore College presents “Interrupting the After Image,” an exhibition curated by Boryana Rusenova-Ina that brings together three artists — Ayesha Kamal Khan, Rusenova-Ina, and Choey Eun Young Cho — whose work draws from materials embedded in their everyday lives.

On view from Sept. 10 through Oct. 8, “Interrupting the After Image” approaches questions of place, translation, distance, and memory from three distinct entry points. The artists investigate shifts in meaning that arise through geographic, linguistic, and material changes, articulating both those transformations and the ongoing evolution of what is encountered and what is remembered.

An opening reception will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Schick Art Gallery. An artists’ talk featuring Khan and Rusenova-Ina will begin at 5 p.m.

Trained in Pakistan and the U.S., Ayesha Kamal Khan deals with the construct of placehood and the folding of contexts that emerge through the impossible task of translating and carrying a sense of place. Her work exaggerates the reduction that happens within this inevitable cycle.

Khan received her M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in New York in 2015 and was a fellow at the Whitney Independent Study Program in 2022-23. Her work has been exhibited at art institutions internationally, including the Venice Architecture Biennale 2021 and the Queens Museum in New York.





Boryana Rusenova-Ina collects the residue of the everyday from personal archives, scribbles, and paper clippings. By tracing and layering these forms across various media, her work reflects on the condition of distance — as an emotional and bodily separation from place — and examines love as a second-hand experience.

Rusenova-Ina earned an M.A. in art, design, and architecture education from the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland in 2009 and an M.F.A. in painting and drawing from The Ohio State University in 2016. Recent solo exhibitions in the U.S. include the Springfield Museum of Art in Ohio and Penn State Altoona in Pennsylvania. Rusenova-Ina is currently an assistant professor of art at Skidmore College.

Translation and material transformation recur throughout Choey Eun Young Cho’s practice, often complicating one another. Her work approaches communication as an unstable passage, following its uneven movement across time, material, and perception.

Choey received an M.F.A. in painting from The Ohio State University in 2018. Her solo shows include “I Ordered a New Body and It Never Came” at Project Space Sarubia in Seoul, South Korea, and “Secret Echo” at the Holman Arts and Media Center at the University of Nevada, Reno. She has been awarded many residencies, including at the KHN Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, Nebraska, and Mass MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts.
